Stockwell Memorial Gardens

Stockwell Memorial Gardens

Originally laid out in 1920, the site's focal point is a superb white stone memorial dedicated to those who gave their lives fighting during the First World War of 1914-18. It also contains a mural, painted on a ventilation house and unveiled in 2001, which commemorates the famous war heroine and local resident Violette Szabó, GC, as well as the many other Stockwell residents who died in the Second World War. The gardens is also home to the 'Bronze Woman' statue, sculpted by Aleix Barbat and inspired by the poem 'Bronze Woman' by Cecile Nobrega. It is a tribute to all black Caribbean women and was unveiled on 8th October 2008.
